Choosing what to wear for your family photos can feel like the hardest part of planning a session, but it really doesn’t have to be.

My goal as your photographer is always the same: to capture your connection, your laughter, and your real moments. And what you wear should support that, not distract from it.

Here is a simple guide to help you feel confident, comfortable, and beautifully coordinated for your next family photoshoot in Maryland, Virginia, or Washington DC.

 1. Start with Soft, Neutral Colors

The easiest way to create timeless images is to choose soft, natural tones.

Think:

  • Cream, beige, ivory, pastel
  • Soft browns and warm earth tones
  • Muted greens, dusty blues, soft blush

These colors photograph beautifully in natural light and keep the focus on your emotions and connection, not the clothes.

Try to avoid:

  • Neon colors (they reflect on skin)
  • Very bold patterns
  • Large logos or text

2. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone wearing the exact same outfit.

Instead, aim for coordination:

  • Pick 2–3 main colors
  • Mix textures (linen, cotton, knit)
  • Let each family member have their own variation of the palette

For example:

  • Mom in a flowing dress in beige
  • Dad in a soft blue shirt and neutral pants
  • Kids in cream, light brown, or soft green tones

It feels natural, effortless, and much more visually interesting in photos.

3. Choose Comfortable, Movement-Friendly Outfits

This is especially important for family sessions with kids. If you can move, sit, run, and cuddle comfortably, you will feel more relaxed, and it will show in your photos.

For moms, long dresses are always a beautiful choice because they:

  • Flow naturally in photos
  • Are flattering without effort
  • Help you feel more “put together” instantly

4. Dress for the Location & Season

Your outfits should always feel like they belong in the environment.

For example:

  • Parks like Brookside Gardens → soft, romantic tones work beautifully
  • Urban DC spots → slightly more structured, modern outfits
  • Sunset sessions → warm tones like rust, cream, olive, soft gold

Think of your session as one complete story where everything belongs together.

5. Keep Kids Comfortable First

The best photos of children always happen when they feel free.

A few tips:

  • Avoid itchy or stiff fabrics
  • Let them wear something familiar (but elevated)
  • Bring a backup outfit just in case
  • Skip anything they constantly need to adjust

Happy kids = natural, joyful photos.

6. Keep It Simple (Always)

If you’re unsure, remember this: Less is more.

Simple outfits always age better than trendy ones. Years from now, you’ll care about the emotion in the photo, not what was fashionable that season.

Final Thought

The most important thing is not the perfect outfit, it’s how you feel in it. If you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself, that’s exactly what will show in your photos. And that’s what makes them beautiful.
