As a photographer, I’ve captured many beautiful moments—couples in love, glowing maternity sessions, the sweet quiet of newborn life—but nothing compares to witnessing the moment a new life enters the world.
A few weeks ago, during a maternity session with a lovely mama-to-be, she shared something deeply personal. She was planning a home birth for her fourth baby—and her first girl. After having three boys, this pregnancy felt extra special. It would be their last child, and she wanted to remember every moment. When she asked me to photograph the birth, I was honored. Nervous. Excited. And ready.
The Text I’d Been Waiting For
After that session, I kept my phone close at all times. I was officially “on call,” waiting for the message that it was time. Then, one night around 10 PM, my phone buzzed. It was her: “Having strong contractions.”
I packed my gear right away, heart racing. The plan was for me to come at the same time as her midwife so I wouldn’t have to wait too long before the birth. A little while later, she texted again: “Midwife is on her way.” That was my sign—I grabbed my camera and left.
Entering the Birth Space
When I arrived at her house, her mom opened the door and quietly led me to the birth room. The moment I stepped in, I felt it: calm, sacred energy.
My client was on the floor, working through powerful contractions. Her midwife knelt behind her, offering gentle support. A birth pool was set up in the corner. Candles flickered softly. Peaceful music played in the background. It was dim, quiet, and full of emotion. Everyone in the room stood around her with quiet love. I moved slowly, respectfully—just observing and documenting.
It was hard at times to see her in pain without being able to help—and in that moment, I finally understood what my husband must’ve felt when I was giving birth to our daughter!
The First Breath
Just 45 minutes after I arrived, baby girl made her grand entrance into the world.
The moment she was born, everything paused. There were tears, laughter, joy, relief. The room overflowed with emotion. Her mom had waited so long for this moment—a daughter after three boys, the last piece of their family puzzle.
I held back my own tears behind the camera and focused on capturing it all: her first cry, the first skin-to-skin, the look on her parents' faces. These are moments that go by in a blur for families. Now they’ll have them forever.
What I’ll Never Forget
This experience taught me so much—not just about photography, but about the strength of women, the beauty of birth, and the quiet power of being invited into such an intimate space.
Birth photography is not just a service—it’s a story. A once-in-a-lifetime moment frozen in time.
Would I do it again? Without a doubt.
If you're expecting—especially if it's your last little one—and want to remember it forever, I’d be honored to help you tell your story too.
Birth Photography
If you’re planning a birth and want these memories documented forever, I’d be honored to be there.
